The Bay of Trincomalee provides security and is openly accessible to all types of sea crafts in all weathers. The beaches are used for recreational purposes such as surfing, scuba diving, fishing and whale watching. The city is renowned for housing the largest Dutch fort in Sri Lanka. It is home to major Sri Lankan naval bases and a Sri Lankan Air Force base.

Pasikuda is renowned because of its extended shallow coastline, making it a great spot for sunbathing and shallow swimming. The mesmerizing, azure waters are hard to resist and, along with the pristine, white-golden sand of the beach, create an incredible sight. The area is fast becoming a tourist hots pot.

The Arugam Bay Beach is a wide sweeping sandy beach in front of the village of Arugam Bay and is an attraction for surfing and swimming all year-round. Arugam Bay‘s first international surfing competition was held by the ISA (International Surfing Association) in the summer of 2004.

The park is one of Sri Lanka’s smallest but most valuable conservation areas for elephants and endemic birds. Lying in the dry zone, the vegetation surrounding the tanks is dry mixed evergreen forest with scrubs.

Tangalle beach is nourished with beautiful beach cabanas built in accordance to the rural architectural style in Sri lanka. They are thatched and stilted. You can easily visit the Rekawa lagoon whereas Sea turtles use to lay their eggs at night.

Day 13

Tangalle – Visit Galle fort

Basking on the southern coast of Sri Lanka in the bay of Galle, the Fort was first built by the Portuguese in 1588 before being extensively fortified by the Dutch in the mid 1600s. Recognized by UNESCO for its cultural heritage value, the Fort was declared a World Heritage Site in 1988 as a unique exposition of “an urban ensemble which illustrates the interaction of European architecture and South Asian traditions from the 16th to the 19th centuries.”

It has a long broad sandy beach, at its best during the October to April holiday season, with safe swimming – although red warning flags fly when currents are too strong. There are some fine beach side hotels, which also have swimming pools, as well as guest houses to suit all budgets close to the carefully planned developed area.
